This change in Girl in the Basement has been somewhat controversial for Elizabeth Rohm's retelling of the Joseph Fritzl case, with many critics pointing out that it feels unnecessary. While Don Cody is based on Joseph Fritzl and Sarah Cody on his daughter Elisabeth, Chris (Jake Etheridge) is entirely fictional, and there is no equivalent to him in the real Girl in the Basement story. The biggest change in this regard is the invention of Chris, Sarah's boyfriend in Girl in the Basement. The Joseph Fritzl movie adaptation is incredibly loose, and unfortunately, the elements that Girl in the Basement added to Elisabeth/Sarah's story were also the only mildly-uplifting moments in her life while imprisoned. Outside the obvious changes such as the names of those involved, setting, and timeframe, there are many significant differences between Girl in the Basement and the true story. When Elisabeth's first child got sick, he agreed to send her to the hospital, ultimately resulting in Josef Fritzl's arrest on April 26, 2008. Though the Girl in the Basement true story adaptation offers a slightly milder version, the movie avoids the common true crime story problem of being sympathetic to the perpetrator, as Don is a fairly accurate portrayal of the twisted and manipulative Josef. ![]() In 1994, Josef forced Elisabeth and her three captive children to dig with their bare hands to expand their prison. ![]() Much like Don and Irene adopted Sarah's children in Girl in the Basement, Josef and Rosemarie cared for the three other kids as Josef fooled Rosemarie and the social workers into thinking Elisabeth abandoned their three grandchildren. Josef disposed of the body using their incinerator. While three remained in captivity and were tortured by Josef alongside Elisabeth, one died shortly after being born. In fact, a ground-floor tenant in the Fritzl home stayed there for 12 years without ever finding out that Elisabeth was in the basement, despite that during this period Elisabeth gave birth to a total of seven children. Don keeps Sarah imprisoned for 20 years, which is harrowing, but Elisabeth Fritzl was in captivity for 24. This is especially shocking since the events portrayed in the movie are difficult to watch, but The Girl in the Basement actually created a story that was less distressing than what actually happened to Elisabeth at the hands of Joseph Fritzl. There were many changes made to Joseph Fritzl's crimes for The Girl in the Basement. The scale of Joseph Fritzl's crimes in Austria also went much further than the fictional Don Cody's in Girl in the Basement, and the real events that inspired Lifetime's movie are among the most disturbing in recent history. The true story Girl in the Basement has a far less self-determinate outcome for Elisabeth Fritzl, the real-life version of Stephanie Scott's Sarah. Later, Sarah escapes to tell her story to the world, and Irene is confronted with the reality of Don's actions and Sarah's decades of captivity. In the Josef Fritzl movie retelling presented by Girl in the Basement, Don fools Irene into thinking that Sarah, having ran away, sent her youngest son to Don and Irene, convincing Irene to take care of the boy with Don. Like most movies or series adaptations of true crime stories, Girl in the Basement is a somewhat milder version of the real events on which it was based (as difficult as that may be to believe, given the chilling nature of Judd Nelson's Don Cody). It's this horrific premise that's made Girl in the Basement such a talking point, but the now-infamous Elisabeth and Josef Fritzl movie adaptation isn't anywhere near as stomach-churning as the real events it's based on. In reality, Don holds Sara captive for decades, torturing and raping her, causing Sara to give birth to several children. In order to cover his tracks, Don concocts a story for his wife, Irene, about Sarah running away. Girl in the Basement is about Sara, a teenager who gets imprisoned by her father, Don, in their basement. ![]() Girl in the Basement is part of Lifetime's "Ripped From the Headlines" collection, and while it's not a true crime docuseries or documentary, it is based on a real case from 2008. 2021's Girl in the Basementis one of the most shocking movies released so far this decade, but what makes the movie truly horrifying is that it's based on true events - the Josef Frtizl case.
